- Rationale

Introduction

"We expect our professors to criticize each other, to debate, to question authority...the actions themselves fall under the realm of educational employment in a university setting...the actions themselves, the actions of criticizing, debating, and questioning authority do serve a legitimate purpose...". [Zeke Wiedenfeld, Court Commissioner, Walworth County Circuit Court]

My name is Chris Henige. I have taught art history at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater since 2001.

The purpose of this site is to provide all of the documentation associated with my experiences at the university starting in 2012 and carrying through to the present day. I will be starting with the current and moving backward through time, and more materials will continue to appear on this site over time.

The documents, audio and commentary contained in this site are all a matter of public record.

Complete Set of Communications
Commentary:

This page contains links to all of my communications which were presented in evidence against me as attachments to formal complaints filed by a small number of individuals. By removing them from the context of the complaints as a whole, these communications can be assessed and evaluated on their own merits. Are any of these communications, on their face, inappropriate? Is there anything in them that is not directly related to university business? Is there any inappropriate language? Is there any evidence that my assertions are not true? If the answer is no to all of these questions, then can there be any question that I had every right to send them? Do they serve legitimate purpose? Who are the recipients of my communications, and are they entitled to the information contained in them? Note: There has never been any demonstration by anyone that any of the contents of these communications are not accurate. I will not make commentary on any of these except where necessary to clarify the context.

Watch your back!
Commentary:

While this seems inflammatory, it was not. I had just come from a conversation with Janovec in his office in which I discussed with him the chair's exclusion of me from the decision to hire in my area, and we mentioned that he was the other faculty member in the department in an area with more than one faculty member, and that he might find a hire going on behind his back as well. That was the reference.

Commentary:

This email was sent after a meeting with the Dean in which I mentioned these four points, and he stated he had forgotten what they were. I told him I would send them to him. I did not agree to them at that time.

Exhibit 169 - Conclusions

Harassment?
Commentary:

The complaints filed against me all allege similar things - that these communications "harass" and "bully". The fundamental questions are, who is making these allegations? Are they the ones being criticized, or are are they third parties? Does the fact that they are the subjects of the criticisms, criticisms that have never been challenged, and those criticisms exposed them and made them feel uncomfortable, mean that those criticism cannot be made? Is it my actions in demanding accountability that have created a "hostile work environment" for them, or is it their own actions, and their inability to defend them, that has done so?
